Here’s hoping you’re having a wonderful long holiday weekend! We don’t have a full edition this week, but I just wanted to let you know that I’m giving thanks for two specific things this year: the ocean and you all!
I launched The Saltwater Chronicles earlier this year with the hope that ‘Making Waves Weekly’ and any other content we publish here would be able to appeal to both ocean lovers and folks wanting to know more. I have been so encouraged by the positive feedback—thank you. The coolest part of this endeavor has been hearing from subscribed friends and family that this newsletter is why they know more about the ocean. If any of you walk away from reading this every week with even more awe or excitement about our oceans and marine life, my job here is done.
Approximately 70 percent of our planet is covered in ocean, and scientists think that one or two million different animal species live in these waters. The ocean feeds us, generates oxygen, and captures carbon. Simply put, we would not be here without it. That’s a lot to be grateful for!
I recently came across a beautiful video reel from ocean videographer Sutton Lynch, and I wanted to share it with you all (click on the image to view the video). It captures golden hour off the coast of Long Island, and it reminds me of everything I love about the ocean. It is beyond beautiful.
DATA POINT
If you want to support the ocean on Giving Tuesday, consider giving to the Ocean Conservancy! Donations will be matched up to $250,000; you can learn more about their work and giving campaign here.
SWIMMING ACROSS YOUR SCREEN
Not exactly swimming, but you know you love the ocean when these are the sorts of selfies you send to the group chat while tide pooling.
Signing off on this week's marine news. See you next week with a new wave of ocean updates!
